Mari Vihmand was born in 1967 in Tartu, Estonia. In 1986-1990 she studied composition for B.M. at the Estonian Academy of Music with Prof.Eino Tamberg, and after further studies with Prof. Lepo Sumera received Master's degree in 1997. Parallel to her studies in Tallinn, Mari Vihmand in 1995-97 pursued her work as student of composition in Lyon, France, with Gilbert Amy and Philippe Manoury. 

Most of her works belong to chamber music, but there are also some orchestral pieces, choir music and children's songs. Her musical style could be characterised as having a restrainedly lyrical, and freshly sentimental quality. "I'm trying to find a balance between intellectual constructions and a highly emotional expression", she says. 

 In 1995 she received the Estonian National Cultural Prize for her Chamber opera "A Story of Glass". In 1996 "Floreo" for symphony orchestra won First Prize at the UNESCO-sponsored contest "International Rostrum of Composers" in Paris, in the category of composers under 30 years of age.

"Oaijé" by Pär Lindgren (born in 1952) and "Floreo" by the Estonian composer Mari Vihmand (born in 1967) , both for orchestra, are the two prize-winning works at the 43. session of International Rostrum of Composers at UNESCO House in Paris from 10 to 14 June 1996.

"Floreo" was played by the Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Arvo Volmer.

35 producers of National Networks from five continents came to the 43.
International Rostrum of Composers, organized by International Music Council, and supported by UNESCO. The purpose of this Rostrum is to encourage the exchange of works of contemporary music between Radio Networks; some of last year's selected works have been broadcasted up to 30 times.

Oaijé (1992-93) pour orchestre du compositeur suédois Pär Lindgren (né en 1952) et Floreo (1995-96), également pour orchestre, de le jeune compositrice estonienne Mari Vihmand (née en 1967) sont les deux oeuvres primées dans les catégories "générale" et "compositeurs de moins de 30 ans" par les producteurs d´emissions musicales radiophoniques participant à la 43ème session de la Tribune internationale des compositeurs tenue à la Maison de l'UNESCO à Paris du 10 au 14 juin 1996.

"La musique ressemble à une fleur de sa germination à son épanouissement éclatant" dit Mari Vihmand à propos de Floreo. Suomise par la Radio estonienne, l´oeuvre était interprétée par l´Orchestre symphonique d´Etat d´Estonie sous la baguette d´Arvo Volmer.

Organisée par le Conseil international de la musique avec l´appui de l´UNESCO et des organismes de radiodiffusion participants, la 43ème Tribune internationale des compositeurs de 35 réseaux nationaux venant de cinq continents.

Cette Tribune a pour but d´encourager l´echange d´oeuvres de musique contemporaine entre les réseaux de radiodiffusion, certaines d´entre elles ont été programmées jusqu´à 30 fois. La Tribune encourage aussi la présentation de ces oeuvres en concert.
